Lively and fun, vibrant and exciting. These are just some of the many words that are best used to describe the latest establishment to take Chaweng by storm. It’s in the heart of the nightlife area. It has headline DJ’s visiting every month, and with its delicious gastro-pubstyle cuisine, it’s much much more than just another bar or just another restaurant. It’s the truly fabulous Palms!
Like I said, Palms is as near to the action as a place could possibly be, being on the corner of Chaweng Beach Road and Soi Green Mango, and just along from the famous Bondi Aussie Bar. And with barstools lining the Soi Green Mango side and comfortable sofa seating on the Beach Road section, it has to be Samui’s perfect venue for street-watching. But with so much going on in the open-on-two-sides building itself, you may not even look outside!
“…Palms – a great place to enjoy excellent food before partying into the night – all in the one spot!”
Palms is open for lunch from midday and is a great place to start the day off with all manner of breakfasts and snacks, but really comes into its own at night when the neon palms around the bar are turned on and their ever changing colours light up both the inside and the surrounding street.
And the interior is a masterpiece of design too, with interesting seating areas and novel features everywhere you look. There’s seating for 36 at both high and low tables downstairs adjacent to the long open bar that runs along the centre, with ample room for a further 36 on the mezzanine floor upstairs by the cocktail bar.
The gastro-pub-style International cuisine menu has been created by one of the island’s finest executive chefs – and it shows! Here’s a couple of their most popular starter dishes so that you can see what I mean. Firstly, there’s the Chilean Mussel Hotpots (for two) complete with chargrilled baguettes and either the classic garlic aioli, white wine, butter and herb panache or sautéed leeks, smoky bacon and Thatcher’s cider. And then there’s the Soft Taco with sour cream and a choice of snapper, grilled chicken or braised beef. Both being great examples of what’s on offer here.
There’s also a great selection of pasta dishes and house-favourite burgers at Palms should you not want to go for the full dining experience. But if you do (and you really should!), here are two highly recommended mains dishes that are well worth going for. The oh-so-tasty Crispy-Skin Salmon comprising Norwegian king salmon with sautéed asparagus, spinach, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper and dill cream is a perfect choice for fishlovers whilst the Free-Range Chicken Breast with a Parma ham roulade filled with spinach and Mediterranean vegetables served with parmesan salad and dauphinois potato will have you thinking that you’re in a 5-star resort’s fine-dining restaurant – it’s that delicious!
Desserts are worth leaving space for too – especially the Triple Caramel consisting of opera cake with caramel sponge, salted mousse and caramel jelly, and the ever-popular Brownie which is a warm milk chocolate brownie served with chocolate sauce, vanilla ice-cream and black Oregon cherries.
“… and you can get to go into Palm’s very own Absolute Vodka-sponsored ‘Ice Bar’.”
Palms prides itself on having an extensive wine and spirits list but you may want to try an Absolut vodka in particular whilst you’re there. Why is that, you may ask? Well, it’s because for a small entrance charge, you can get to go into Palm’s very own ‘Ice Bar’ (that’s sponsored by Absolut). Just pop on one of their many warm coats (or tiger-print tops!) and enter the freezing cold room that’s complete with amazing ice sculptures and (more importantly) a whole range of Absolut vodkas!. The first drink’s included in the entrance price and you can nip in and out as much as you want throughout the evening. Great fun and ideal for facebook selfies too!
And when it comes to music and the sound system at Palms, well that’s just about perfect too. Which is just as well, as there’s an in-house DJ who controls every aspect of that as the evening progresses and the whole place transforms into a thrilling nightspot in its own right. There’s even a spinning disco ball that sends fragmented splashes of colour all around. Being such an ideal venue, Palms hosts many parties and events with headline DJ’s on board and it definitely becomes the place to be on the island. Just look out for the flyers and online updates. So there you have it. Palms – a great place to enjoy excellent food before partying into the night – all in the one spot!
