It’s vibrant – yet relaxed. It’s highly professional – yet fun. And above all else, it’s bringing a whole new style of ‘street-side’ dining to Samui. In its first few years of operations, Stacked has already become one of the island’s most popular restaurants. And here’s why…
For a start, it’s ideally located in the middle of Chaweng Beach Road, next to the new OZO Chaweng Samui resort, so finding it couldn’t be easier.
Raised two metres above street level means that there are a few steps leading up to this smart and attractive restaurant. There’s wooden decking along the wide street-frontage terrace, and around one side, where there’s seating for 110 diners to watch the daily catwalk of passers-by and enjoy dining-under-the-stars. And take a step into the 75-seat air-conditioned interior and you’ll be met by one of the most attractively designed eateries on the island.
Modern wall sections of yellow, grey and green tiles with blonde wood, hammered copper and black steel here and there combine perfectly with some rustic elements, such as the ‘old’ corrugated-iron roof over the show kitchen and the water-pipes which form the foot-rails along the bar. And there are lots more of these novel design touches throughout the restaurant: service stations with mini herb gardens above (from which the chef occasionally comes along to snip some for adding to the dishes), assorted dining tables with inset ice-buckets, homemade-pickle in jars on every table, comfy sofas interspersed with lovely shelving displaying various products along the walls.
“…and so onto the onto the cuisine – that’s billed as ‘international comfort food’”
And sports fans will be pleased to learn that there are two HD projectors which show live international sport (including coverage of all the major events).
So onto the cuisine – that’s billed as ‘international comfort food’ – and the man in charge of the show – Executive Chef Matthew Rubin. And he’s the perfect person to be at the helm of such an extra-ordinary restaurant, having extensive culinary experience in both his home town of San Francisco, California, and throughout Thailand.
Stacked’s menu is packed with temptations, with ‘STARTs’ including a Grilled Caesar – grilled Romaine, Caesar dressing, candied bacon, Parmesan and anchovy sourdough croutons, and a Rings of Fire – calamari, coriander-chili tempura batter, classic tartar sauce, and sriracha aioli.
The restaurant is famed for its burgers, which is hardly surprising as they’re made daily and consist of 100% hand-ground imported beef (both Black Angus and Wagyu) with no fillers and are lightly seasoned.
Whilst you are free to add your own toppings, Stacked offers a few signature burgers that are highly recommended. The Aristocrat, a wagyu beef burger with Spanish Manchego, wild mushroom confit, truffle aioli, fresh rocket, and beef demi-glace is sure to please. And another hit is the Samui Bad Boy, with its tender pulled-pork, bourbon BBQ, cheddar, jalapenos, salad and grilled ciabatta bun.
But don’t think that Stacked is only about burgers – that would be a big mistake! The restaurant also offers a wide choice of delicious lighter fare too, such as the Ahi Tuna which is marinated in sake and miso and seared rare with coriander coconut smashed potatoes, shiitake mushrooms and baby kale. And for the heartier eater, there’s the Wagyu Tomahawk – a 1000g bone-in rib-eye grilled to perfection and served with plenty of sides and beef demiglace. Children are very well catered for as well in this family-friendly restaurant, with their very own fun menu (mains and desserts) that they’ll love, and vegetarians aren’t forgotten either, with their own interesting selection also provided.
“Yes, with a kitchen and bar producing new and innovative items, a modern-yet-relaxed ambiance, and a lovely service staff, Stacked has surely become one of Samui’s ‘special’ restaurants!”
The ‘sweets’ section offers indulgences in the form of new creations and old classics, including both the PB&J – chocolate truffle & peanut butter ice-creams, berry jam and brioche cinnamon toast, and the Warm Apple Crumble hot out of the oven with berry compote and vanilla bean ice-cream.
Stacked’s extensive wine list boasts bottles from all the world for an affordable price, and if you’re in search of a familiar taste, they have one of the largest selections of imported bottles of beer on Samui, including Greene King IPA, Crafty Old Hen and three flavors of Magners Cider.
The Stacked bar is just as focused as the kitchen, and serves drinks made from the best and freshest produce Samui has to offer. It’s evident that employing an international mixologist to create an exciting and eclectic cocktail menu was a great move, as the cocktails are packed with both flavour and 45ml-pours of top-shelf spirits. Try the Smooth Sailing comprising house-made grenadine, fresh green mango juice, freshly squeezed orange juice and vodka, or the Simply Stacked which is a martini glass filled with fresh watermelon juice, house-made cinnamon syrup, vodka and a cinnamon mixing stick, and you’ll see what I mean.
