It’s what gastronomic dreams are made of. An idyllic tropical beach setting, complete with overhead coconut palm trees swaying in the cooling sea breezes. Lots and lots of space with various seating choices. And most important of all, some of the finest food that you’ll ever have the pleasure of eating. Introducing the amazing Spice Zone!
It’s part of the fabulous Royal Muang Samui Villas resort in Choeng Mon, which is on the road between Big Buddha (and the airport) and Chaweng (it’s five kilometres from both locations), so getting there is pretty easy. And you won’t be able to miss the place as its magnificent Thai-style architecture and gardens are so eye-catching and beautiful, and are a local landmark.

You’ll see their popular Italian Ciccio Ristorante & Pizzeria on the left of the property as you walk up to the reception (you might like to go there another evening – but that’s a different story!). And although you can take the few minutes’ stroll through the resort to Spice Zone, a small fleet of electric buggies is always on hand to effortlessly glide you there.
You’re dropped off beside the free-form swimming pool and as you pass, you’ll see the water cascading down into it from a waterfall above some huge ‘rocks’. Within which, Royal Muang Samui’s renowned Cave Rai Ra Beach Spa is housed (and that’s also another story and worth coming back for another day!).
To the left, you’ll see the ornately-designed air-conditioned ‘breakfast buffet’ suite and next to that is the open-sided interior section of Spice Zone which comfortably seats 60 diners. But, weather permitting, most people choose to sit either on the raised decking around the attractive bar/lounge area (which fronts the kitchen and seats another 30), or down a couple of steps and on the beach itself where tables for 30+ diners are set up every evening.
If you’re going for dinner, get there early for cocktails/drinks and you’ll be able to enjoy watching the sun go down across the hills the other side of the bay and see the twinkling lights romantically popping on all around, setting the scene for the evening’s culinary adventure.
Spice Zone is perfect for couples wishing to enjoy the romantic aspects of the restaurant but it’s also ideal for families with children who want to continue playing on the (safe) beach after dark whilst the parents indulge their gastronomic desires!
And although the word ‘spice’ is in the restaurant’s name, that doesn’t indicate that the food here is extra ‘spicy’! The fare offered is International and Thai, and you can state your preferences as to the level of spiciness for spicy dishes.
The menu is full of interesting and delicious choices and here’s a few recommendations. Firstly, from the appetizers’ section, there’s the Tropical Rock Lobster Delight – a freshly poached rock lobster tail on a bed of fresh mango and pomelo with a tasty cocktail sauce, served in a coconut half. And then there’s the ever-popular Traditional Greek Salad which is blended with virgin olive-oil, garlic, lime juice and ground oregano, and topped with marinated feta cheese and black olives.

And from the main course options, there’s the succulent Sautéed Duck Breast on a bed of fresh mango with a French-style green pepper sauce, and served with onion- and rosemary-flavored roast potatoes and grilled vegetables. Another unsurprisingly popular dish is the Potpourri of Island Seafood in Saffron Nage – a delicious white wine poached combination of tiger prawns, sea bass, red snapper, baby squid, lobster won tan and mussels served on sautéed young spinach leaves and topped with saffron nage. Both are highly recommended.
It’s worth noting at this point that a full vegetarian option is also always available, as are vegan and gluten-free dishes (just give 24 hours notice for these).
Finally we have dessert, so definitely leave some room for them. And both the Coconut Panna Cotta accompanied by a selection of tropical fruits and delicious caramel and red wine sauce, and the Flamed Mango Crêpes – fresh mango filled crêpes topped with a caramelized orange Grand Marnier sauce and accompanied by vanilla ice cream and a medley of tropical fruits – will make you glad you did!
If you like dinner entertainment, then go along on a Monday or a Thursday as that’s when a very talented and friendly Filipino duo is there to serenade the guests (happily performing requested songs too) from 6:00-10:00 pm.
